While the 41-Megapixel PureView 808 may have stolen most of the limelight, Nokia still had a brand new phone to show off at MWC. The new Lumia 610 is an entry level Windows Phone that will sell for a measly €189.
Nokia announced the Lumia 610 as its fourth smartphone with Windows Phone, and this one is the baby of the family. It has fairly basic tech specs, but Nokia has sweetened the deal with plenty of new software.
The Lumia 610 has an 800MHz processor coupled with 256MB of RAM, which meets Microsoft’s minimum requirements for Windows Phone 7.5, but won’t see it blasting through the latest games with ease unfortunately. The rear camera is an ample 5-Megapixel sensor with autofocus and LED flash, while the front camera feature is omitted. Screen size is a decent 3.7-inches, with a WVGA resolution of 800 x 480, and inside you’ll get 8GB of storage space.
With Nokia’s Lumia 610 we meet a new version of Windows Phone – Tango. Tango is an updated version of 7.5, otherwise known as Mango, and has been designed with entry level and basic phones in mind. Nokia is bundling in plenty of software with the 610, including updated Maps, and a new app called Nokia Transport, which will provide public transport information for trams, buses and trains for 500 cities in 46 countries.
Nokia is focussing on China and other mass markets with its new budget phone, though it will become available on a worldwide basis. With a price tag of around £170, the Lumia 610 will overtake ZTE’s Tania as the cheapest Windows Phone, and may bring the platform to the masses.
It will be available in white, cyan, magenta and black – just as with the Lumia 800 and 900 – and will go on sale sometime in Q2 of this year, so between April and June.
