Splashtop has just released a new THD version of its popular VNC app, which promises a lag-free stream of high resolution video and great quality audio from your PC to a Tegra 3 Android tablet.
The company impressed earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show, demonstrating the app streaming Skyrim from a PC over Wi-Fi. Users were invited to pick up an Xbox 360 controller which was connected to an ASUS Transformer Prime, and see just how smoothly the game was streamed from the PC. The Verge had some hands-on time with the demo and said that it felt like the game was playing from the tablet, not the PC, so you know it’s going to be impressive.
Splashtop THD is now finally available from the Android Market, but only for devices that have the Nvidia Tegra 3 Quad-Core processor inside, and are running on Android 4.0, aka Ice Cream Sandwich. The ASUS Transformer Prime TF201 fits that bill perfectly, though the app’s creators do state that it’s merely ‘optimised’ for Tegra 3 devices and will run on Android 3.1+.
While high-res gaming is clearly the big sell for Splashtop THD, it still makes an excellent remote desktop application for other Android tablets. If you’ve not got the ASUS Transformer Prime, we’d still recommend it as an excellent way of viewing your PC or laptop’s screen on your tablet, and it should work well with older Tegra 2 devices such as the Motorola Xoom and Acer Iconia Tab A500.
To get everything working you’ll need to download Splashtop THD from the Android Market (£4.44/$6.99), and the free streaming server application onto your PC, which you can get here. The app’s creators recommend using a good quality router to ensure the best performance – ideally something with 802.11n support.
The app isn’t limited to streaming Skyrim either – that’s just the most impressive demonstration we’ve seen yet – it could be used to play almost any title your heart desires.
