Mozilla is eagerly eyeing Android as the platform for a mobile version of its popular internet browsing software FireFox – and it seems no one else is going to get a look-in anytime soon!
“There are no plans for PlayBook or iOS” – said Jay Sullivan, VP of Products of Mozilla at last week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Thus shooting down the claims that FireFox might appear sometime on Apple or RIM’s mobile and tablet operating systems and swearing allegiance to Google’s massively distributed Android platform which is in the early phases of a roll out for a latest update, 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with a future release, presumed to be named “Jelly Bean” expected in late 2012.
Speaking to a fellow tech site about the future between the FireFox web-surfing software and Android, Sullivan is also quoted to say “We’ve shipped something like a little over 8 million downloads of the Firefox browser for Android and we have a new update that’s coming up with some massive performance increases including Flash click to play.”
With Google Chrome prepped for a widespread release on Android handsets and tablets in the next few months, Mozilla is still seemingly unphased by the challenges it might face when Google’s native web software finally surfaces – “We love it. We like to compete.”
