Pictures of Fourth Sony Smartphone Leak – Codename MT27i: Xperia Pepper

It looks as though Sony has plans to launch a fourth smartphone in its new Xperia NXT series, as pictures of a phone with the model number MT27i and codenamed ‘Pepper’ have leaked online.

The Xperia Pepper is said to be Sony’s follow-up to the Xperia Neo V that was released when the company went by the name of Sony Ericsson, which leads us to believe it may be officially named the Xperia V, which would follow suit with Sony’s naming strategy for its 2012 smartphone line-up.

In the leaked picture we see the phone alongside three Xperia Smart Tags, which confirms that the Xperia Pepper will tote NFC capabilities. From the specifications we’re hearing, it looks as though the Pepper will join the official Xperia U in the entry-level area – a 1GHz processor, 3.7-inch touchscreen and a 5-Megapixel rear camera make the handset decent, but nothing ground-breaking.

The Xperia Pepper features the same styling Sony has used across the new range with the Xperia S, U and P, with squared edges and the XPERIA logo at the bottom of the handset. We can see from the picture that there are only three capacitive touch buttons below the screen, which means that the operating system will be Android 4.0 – aka Ice Cream Sandwich – as with the other three phones in the range.

Unfortunately the Xperia Pepper is missing the very cool see-through bar that features on the Xperia S, U and P, though it does have an attractive design – much better than that of the Xperia Neo V anyway.

The Xperia Pepper, or MT27i, has only made a brief appearance on a Chinese forum, so unfortunately we’re still none the wiser on a release date and price. It looks to be a low-end smartphone for Sony though, so the price shouldn’t sit as high as the Xperia S and U.
