Panasonic could well be releasing a new micro four-thirds camera, the Lumix GF5, in the near future, which we now know thanks to a loose-lipped ambassador for the company.
The above image shows the Lumix GF5 in the flesh, which was uploaded to Instagram – of all places – by ‘Angelababy’, a Hong Kong celebrity and ambassador for Panasonic’s products. Whether the product was leaked on purpose or not remains to be seen, but if it was a slip-up, we’d imagine Panasonic isn’t too happy right now.
The GF5 will become the fourth model in the GF range of Lumix micro four-thirds cameras from Panasonic. As the successor to the current GF3, you may be wondering why the fourth camera in the range isn’t labeled as the GF4; don’t worry, we were too. It turns out that the number 4 sounds similar to the word “death” in Japanese, so companies tend to steer clear of using it in product names – mystery solved!
Specifications for the new camera were reported earlier this week ahead of the photo leak. Nphoto reported that the Lumix GF5 would feature a 12-Megapixel sensor with an ISO rate up to 12800 and a speedy autofocus rate of 0.09 seconds. The rear of the camera will boast an impressive touchscreen LCD display with 920k pixels, although we’re not sure if the screen will be a fixed or rotating, adjustable affair.
Aesthetically the GF5 looks to borrow looks from the original GF1, including the rubberized grip on the front. The top of the body curves upwards around the lens area, rather than being completely flat, as on the GF1.
The GF5 will feature a hot-swappable lens system, and we expect many different types of lens to be available alongside the camera when it launches. In the leaked photo we can see a Vario 14-42 lens with an aperture range of 3.5-5.6.
With the product now leaked and visible online, with a little luck Panasonic will come right out and announce it officially soon.
