UK Network Three Stands Up to Ofcom Over “Unfair” 4G Network Auction

You got to fight for your right to 4G – or so it seems, as another of our U.K networks has spoken out about Ofcom’s decision to allow Everything Everywhere, the parent company of T-Mobile and Orange, to test the new super-speedy mobile data standard before anyone else as well as awarding them with the largest chunk of the lucrative 1800MHz spectrum. Three believes it will be left out when the big boys start jostling for their spot and, like Vodafone, isn’t happy about it.

Threatening legal action, Three’s financial backer, a Chinese tycoon referred to as the “Superman” of business in his homeland, Li Ka Shing says that the network’s absence, in what’s quickly becoming a battle ground for 4G communications, is not down to any lack of funds and is quoted as saying that Three is “backed by a multibillion-pound business the size of Barclays bank so has plenty of resources to take part in a fair and open auction”.

It could appear that as one of the smaller kids in the mobile network playground, Three is getting the elbow with larger companies such as Everything Everywhere double-threat of Orange and T-Mobile, as well as Virgin taking 3 out of the 4 major stakes in the spectrum allocation. 4G testing for faster mobile data will begin in the coming months for a public roll out scheduled to begin in the next couple years.
