Nintendo looks set to pip rivals Microsoft and Sony to the post in the next-gen games console race, with its Wii U console scheduled in for a November 2012 launch.
The exact launch date is November 18th, which has been revealed in a leaked internal email sent by a key Japanese games console retailer, Media Land of Tokyo. Media Land is one of the biggest video game retailers in the city, and WiiUDaily got the scoop from employees at the store
This date marks the U.S launch for the console, although eager gamers in Nintendo’s homeland of Japan will have to wait exactly a week longer for the console to launch there.
No information could be obtained on a European or global release date for the console, although the European launch is expected to come after the Japanese launch. The original Nintendo Wii launched in the U.S initially on November 19th 2006 and then in Japan two weeks later, and Europe a week on from Japan.
We already knew that Nintendo was aiming to launch its next-generation console before 2012 is out, although the company hasn’t confirmed an exact date due to having plenty left to finish on the console. Several tech publications got exclusive hands-on time with the console late last year, with reporters being told by Nintendo representatives present that the design could still change.
The Wii U keeps the glossy white finish from the original Wii, although it has been designed to sit horizontally rather than vertically. The handheld controller is easily the most exciting aspect of the console, featuring a full colour touchscreen that can be used to play mini games, display extra in-game information and much more.
Many expect the Wii U to continue with Nintendo’s trend of offering fun, interactive games for the family rather than offering blistering fast processors and super-realistic gaming as Microsoft and Sony plan to do with their Xbox 720 ‘Durango’ and Playstation 4 ‘Orbis’ consoles.
We’re taking this date with just a small pinch of salt, although a November launch wouldn’t be surprising, especially given the original Wii’s November launch.
