Apple has teased us with the possibility of a big announcement in 2 months’ time, confirming the time and place for its annual WorldWide Developers Conference (WWDC).
The event will take place between June 11 and 15th at the Moscone West Center in San Francisco – the same place Apple used to reveal the iPad 3. Tickets were priced at a cool £1599, yet the event sold out in less than 2 hours. Those hoping to buy tickets and sell them on at a profit have been stung, too, as Apple has enforced a no-resale policy.
So just what are we likely to see at WWDC 2012? A new iPhone, a new range of iPods, or perhaps some new software? We’re not likely to see a new iPhone unfortunately, as Apple has a history of revealing those around August/September time. A big software update for iOS devices is likely though, which could add a bunch of cool new features to current iPhones, iPods and iPads.
Let’s take a look at what Apple has revealed at WWDC in the past few years.
2008
Back in the iPhone’s early days, Apple launched OS version 2.0 and the App Store at this year’s WWDC. We all know how popular the app concept and the App Store itself became from here…
2009
iOS 3 was detailed as a major update for the iPhone 3G, Apple revealed the faster iPhone 3GS and a new 13” MacBook Pro to compliment refreshed 15 and 17” versions and the new OS X 10.6 software that ran on them.
2010
Steve Jobs took to the stage to reveal the iPhone 4, the branding of its software becoming iOS, and both FaceTime and iMovie for iOS devices.
2011
Apple revealed a new version of OS X: Lion. The new software merged parts of the mobile iOS software with Apple’s OS X operating system for desktop and laptop versions of the Mac computer. It also revealed iOS 5 as a major update for iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads, and iCloud.
2012?
Although Apple has revealed two new iPhones at WWDC events in the past 4 years, many consider it unlikely that we’ll see the iPhone 5 until much later in the year. For starters we would have normally heard plenty of rumours and possibly even spotted a few parts for a new iPhone if we were less than two months away from the launch.
A major update to iOS 6 is more likely to be revealed this June in preparation for the new iPhone arriving later in the year, but we’re not sure exactly what the new software will hold.
Apple used WWDC as a platform to announce big updates to both OS X and iOS every year bar one for the past four years, and with test versions of OS X 10.8 ‘Mountain Lion’ already with developers, we’re thinking that Apple will officially announce it between June 11-15, along with a new version of iOS.
Do you think Apple will pick up the trend from 2009/2010 and announce a new iPhone this June?
