After weeks of teasing and running around like headless chickens, trying to figure out cryptic clues, Activision has finally announced that the next title in its immensely popular Call of Duty series will be titled Black Ops 2.
Of course, we already all but knew that, thanks to some cleverly hidden morse code within the Call of Duty website. We know also have confirmation that the previously leaked launch date of November 13th is bang on, and will be the date that Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC gamers will be able to buy the game.
Activision has not mentioned Wii, Wii U or 3DS versions of the game for Nintendo fans, although it typically announces these separately at a later date.
The game will be set in the near future – 2025 – as you descend into a 21st Century Cold War taking place in a war-torn Los Angeles, “where technology and weapons have converged to create a new generation of warfare”. Three screenshots from the game have just leaked, two of which show that awesome remote-controlled quadrotor with an underslung machine gun that we saw demonstrated by CoD gamer Tacitus in one of the viral videos Activision teased us with in the run-up to the announcement.
A third leaked photo shows what looks to be some sort of camouflaged walking tank amidst the wreckage of a modern city. The box art resembles that of the original Black Ops title, with a dark figure wielding two weapons.
As expected, the countdown timer on the official Call of Duty website ran down to 0 during one of the NBA Playoff games – LA Lakers v Denver Nuggets. Interestingly this game took place at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, the GPS coordinates for which could be found flickering in a small box on the Call of Duty website.
The trailer plays heavily on the aspect of robots and gadgetry, which we’re extremely excited about. Treyarch has also confirmed that there will be a Zombie Mode available in Black Ops 2, if you like getting your survival mode on.
