Research in Motion has just launched a significant software update for BlackBerry smartphones in the Curve, Torch and Bold ranges.
Version 7.1 of the BlackBerry OS adds a new feature called BlackBerry Tag that we’ve mentioned before. Tag works on BlackBerrys with the NFC feature to allow you to simply touch two phones together in order to share files, contacts and even add each other on BBM.
Another key feature added in 7.1 is Mobile Hotspot – something that Android and iPhone has had for a while and BlackBerry users have wanted badly. Mobile Hotspot effectively turns your phone into a Wi-Fi router to share your 3G signal, allowing up to 5 devices to be connected at one time.
The following phones will be eligible for the update, which can be installed over the air or by plugging in to your PC and using BlackBerry Desktop Manager:
- Bold 9900
- Torch 9810
- Torch 9860
- Curve 9360
- Curve 9380
- Porsche Design P’9981
The easiest way to update your phone is to connect it to a Wi-Fi network and install the update over the air, cable-free. To check for the update and install it, follow these steps:
All > Options > Device > Software Updates
You can also plug your phone into a PC or Mac and use the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software to install the update. Both the OTA update and the PC method will back up your data before installing the update, so you won’t lose anything.
A new Battery Saving Mode will help your BlackBerry last a little longer when you’re running out of juice, adjusting the brightness of your display, shutting down Mobile Hotspot when it’s not in use and increasing the backlight timeout to do so.
Owners of the Curve 9360 and 9380 models will also get an extra bonus: an FM Radio app. Plug in your headphones, which act as the antenna, and away you go.
Grab the update now and let us know how you get on.
