If the average compact digital camera just doesn’t cut it when it comes to your love for outdoor pursuits, Olympus’s new ultra-tough TF-1 might just be what you’re looking for. It’s also perfect for clumsy camera owners too.
Thanks to a tough design the TF-1 is waterproof down to 12 metres and shockproof too, resisting drops from 2 metres, so it should cope with those accidental drops adequately. The rugged casing is also crushproof to a force rating of 100kg and freeze-proof down to -10 degrees, just in case you’re looking for a cold-weather camera aficionado.
Underneath its tough exterior lies an impressive camera capable of taking beautiful photos. A wide-angle f/2.0 lens takes precedence on the front of the camera, teaming up with a 12-megapixel high-sensitivity backside illuminated CMOS sensor and a TruePic VI image processor.
The latter is responsible for taking better pictures than has ever been possible on a ruggedised compact camera, so says Olympus.
Despite featuring some pretty high-tech camera specs, the TG-1 will still be perfect for camera beginners and those who just want to point and shoot. It features Olympus’ intelligent iHS option, which allows the camera to intelligently alter the sensitivity and speed of the shutter when you’re snapping away, in order to get the best shots possible. The TG-1 also features a GPS module and electronic compass for geotagging.
You’ll be able to view your snaps back in high quality using the 3-inch OLED screen that’s on the back of the camera, which is of course well protected, and features anti-reflective properties to help you see your photos better in bright sunlight.
If the Olympus TG-1 sounds like your thing then you’ll be able to pick one up in the UK for £359.99 as of June, in Silver. If you need something even tougher, an additional case will launch alongside the camera, making it waterproof down to 45 metres, adding a flash attachment to boot.
