Rocksteady’s “Batman: Arkham City” may have seen the Dark Knight clean up the streets of Gotham as well as sweep the boards at a number of prestigious gaming award events, but it’s the questionable new box art celebrating these accolades that poses a riddle.
The game follows on from the events of 2010’s Batman: Arkham Asylum and was penned by veteran screen writer Paul Dini and featuring the voice talents of Kevin Conroy as the Caped Crusader himself and Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill in the role he now owns, arch-nemesis – the Joker.
This super-star power has earned the game titles such as Best Adaption, Best Xbox 360 Game and Best Non Human Character for Hamill’s role at top ceremonies such as the Spike Video Game Awards and the GAME Awards. Most recently Arkham City snapped up the Best Action title at the BAFTAs for Video Gaming and its this claim and another for a GamesMaster Golden Joystick Award that spawns the offending artwork.
The new cover for the Batman: Arkham City Windows PC “Game of the Year” edition features one of the incredible Batman drawings which were created to promote the game’s launch. However.. layered on top of image’s soft tones and subtle shading are brash graphics boasting the games accolades in both of the afforementioned awards events, as well as a slapdash banner telling us that this addition comes inclusive of the new Harley Quinn’s Revenge bonus content. Just so we don’t forget this is in fact the “Game of the Year” edition there’s an abrasive red bar across to top to remind us. Other re-release covers for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 have been spotted featuring obscuring red lettering that barely fits the cover without appearing crudely positioned and out of line.
We don’t know who threw this one together but for a game based around a comic book character whose adventures have been artistic masterworks over their 73 year legacy we’d expect a little more love to be shown on the cover of the World’s Finest Batman game..
