If the latest rumours are to be believed, it’s thought that Facebook are looking to spend some more of their billions on buying out another company.
That company is Face.com; based in Tel Aviv, it has created a platform which allows for efficient and accurate facial recognition in photos that are uploaded to the web and also via mobile applications. The Face.com apps along with the company’s API services scan billions of photos every month, which can then be tied to social networking sites. Since February 2011, Face.com has been used to identify around 18 billion faces using its API and dedicated Facebook apps.
The company has released two Facebook apps: Photo Finder and also Photo Tagger. The Photo Finder app allows users to identify untagged pictures of themselves, along with their friends that may also appear in their pictures and tag them. Photo Tagger is an app that allows bulk-tagging of faces which appear in multiple photos that are then directly uploaded to Facebook.
There’s no question that these apps prove to be a valuable tool for users in allowing them to manage their online photos, and no doubt this is what appeals to Facebook. Should the rumour be true, it’s thought that Facebook would be prepared to buy Face.com for between $80-100 million.
However, CEO of Face.com Gil Hirsch has denied these rumours at the moment by saying there’s “no news to announce,” but as we know, lots of CEOs say things like this to cover up, so it’s still possible that we might be seeing another Facebook acquisition fairly soon. As ever, if we get any further information about this, you can be sure we’ll let you know.
