Nokia Lumia 610 Windows Phone Launches in the UK Today

[tab name=’News’]

Nokia’s cheapest Windows Phone to date launches today in the UK, ushering in a new generation of Microsoft mobiles for the cash-strapped phone buyer.

Joining the flagship Lumia 900, Lumia 800 and pay-as-you-go friendly Lumia 710 is the new Lumia 610, a phone that Nokia announced earlier in the year. Despite a lower price tag, the Lumia 610 shares many features with its slightly pricier brother, the 710.

It’s almost identical in size and shape, although the 610 is a few grams heavier. It also features the same 3.7-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels and a pixel density of 242ppi, which we felt was of a good quality in our Lumia 710 video review.

A 5-megapixel camera adorns the back of the device with an LED flash to help in low light. Unfortunately video recording quality drops from 720p HD to only VGA, which may disappoint some. The processor is also a fair amount slower at 800MHz, which coupled with the lower 256MB of RAM, means that the Lumia 610 is unable to play some of the top Windows Phone games, including Angry Birds (although this will be rectified by Rovio soon). You do however get the same 8GB of storage as the Lumia 710, so plenty of space for photos, videos, apps and tunes.

As has become the standard, Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) is the operating system on board, along with Nokia’s excellent selection of apps including Nokia Drive and Nokia Music.

The best thing about the Nokia Lumia 610 is bound to be the price tag for many; it’s available free of charge on contracts for just £15 per month with O2, Vodafone, Virgin Mobile, T-Mobile and Orange. For those who prefer to buy their phones outright to use with a SIM only deal, the Lumia 610 will set you back around £180. Four different colours are available: white, cyan, magenta and black.
