After launching a 15-inch next-generation MacBook Pro with Retina Display this week, Apple’s fans have already turned to wondering when a smaller version will be launched.
Apple quietly cut the 17-inch model from its range of MacBook Pro notebooks, leaving only the 13 and 15-inch variants. The Cupertino Company only revealed one size of Retina Display-toting model this week at its WWDC event – a 15-inch model.
Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at KGI Securities, released a report on Apple’s plans 4 days before the announcement. The report was bang on, stating that Apple would launch a Retina Display model alongside upgraded versions of the existing model, rather than replacing the whole line. In that same report, Kuo says that a 13-inch version of the Retina Mac would launch later this year – August at the earliest, but possibly October time.
“[W]e don’t expect the new 13” MacBook to be available until after August this year, as it has limited space for thermal dissipation and uses a lower-yield retinal display than the 15” version.”
Apple proudly showed off a complex internal design with the Retina Mac, which helps them to disperse heat generated by components in a very efficient way. The notebook is very slim and compact, and as such there’s not a great deal of room for air to dissipate. Kuo believes that the same results will be hard to achieve in a smaller 13-inch model, which may delay its launch.
Kuo recently revisited his report and spoke to AppleInsider about the possibility of a 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro. He believes that Apple, provided they can get the design and display right, will start to ramp up production of the device in September, ready for an October launch in Apple Stores and online. If correct, this means that we could see Apple unveil the model alongside a new iPhone.
