These days when a simple app for your smartphone becomes popular, it’s not going to stick to just being an app any more. Angry Birds is now a multi-million franchise with games on all sorts of platforms, theme parks and tonnes of accessories.
The next app to go big time is Draw Something, the Pictionary-style social game for iOS and Android devices. Draw Something rose to become a household name a couple months ago, before being bought out by gaming giant Zynga. Since then we’ve seen the number of players decline, although it’s still hugely popular (even my mum plays it!).
Unbeknown to most happy doodlers, the rights to turn the game into a TV show have been fiercely competed for during the past couple of weeks. U.S TV network CBS won the bidding war, netting it the rights to create a pilot TV show based on the game.
The idea of the game is to get celebrities on the show to compete, guessing drawings as they’re created on the show, just as you would when playing on your smartphone. Where things really get interesting is the plans for getting you, the viewer involved.
Although nothing is currently set in stone, CBS would like viewers to be able to play along at home using smartphones and tablets, competing to win prizes. This sounds pretty awesome to us, and would surely appeal to the hardened Draw Something addicts out there.
Should the pilot prove to be popular, the game show could become the real deal very soon. Styluses at the ready…
