With Google Maps on its way out of the next revision of the Apple iOS software (iOS 6) for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, it seems that the internet and software giant is clinging to the platform for as long as it can.
In addition to (maybe) announcing that its location and direction software might re-appear on the App Store after it’s been replaced by Apple’s own mapping app, the popular Google email service Gmail – which already resides there – will be getting an update from today for devices running iOS 4 and above.
The official Gmail experience for your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch already delivers message notifications, “threaded” email conversations (just as you would read you text messages), mail organisation with archiving, labelling and starring of messages you want to highlight this as well as a priority mailbox to redirect messages from your most important contacts into a separate section from the main inbox.
Improvements with update 1.2.7812 brings in Notification Center support with banners, alerts and the ability to view or change your notifications visibility from your Apple gadget’s the lock screen. There’s also the potential to send from multiple Gmail account from with the app and sessions will no longer expire, meaning no more repetitive log-ins after prolonged non-use.
Existing Gmail users can update their app and new downloaders can grab it in its latest version from the Apple App Store today.
