The age-old Android-fan favourite ‘Android is better than iPhone because it has Flash’ is soon to be no more, as Adobe has announced the app will not be supported on Jelly Bean.
Google announced the next Android update – 4.1 ‘Jelly Bean’ – earlier this week, and now Adobe has revealed that Flash is not a supported platform on the new OS. This goes for the Nexus 7 tablet which runs Jelly Bean out of the box and any devices that may update from Android 4.0 to 4.1, such as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
“If a device is upgraded from Android 4.0 to Android 4.1, the current version of Flash Player may exhibit unpredictable behaviour, as it is not certified for use with Android 4.1,” Adobe has said.
“Future updates to Flash Player will not work. We recommend uninstalling Flash Player on devices which have been upgraded to Android 4.1.”
What’s more, Adobe will no longer be offering its Flash Player app for all Android devices from the Play Store as of August 15th. The app, which is currently available as a (very popular) free download, will be removed from the Play Store and will no longer be available to download.
Any devices that currently have the app installed – and there will be millions of them – will be able to still get updates from Adobe, but if your device updates to Android 4.1, you’ll then lose the app.
Steve Jobs refused to put Flash Player on the iPhone and iPad because he believed it was poorly made and full of security problems, much to the dismay of iPhone and iPad users, and the delight of Android users. Despite known issues and slowly being replaced by the more efficient HTML5 option, Android users still love to boast about having Flash Player when iOS devices don’t.
Losing support for Flash isn’t going to be the end of the world, and any new non-Jelly Bean devices purchased after the app’s disappearance from the Play Store will still be able to install the app as an apk file from the web, we’d expect.
