Hackers have struck again, but this time it’s the gamers who use Blizzard’s games and the Battle.net website, which stores financial details for games such as World Of Warcraft, Diablo III and Starcraft 2, that have been affected.
Blizzard has confirmed that its Battle.net gaming service website has been compromised by hackers today and have issued a warning to all users of the site to immediately change password details to ensure accounts stay secure, and that they have closed the hole that the hackers have found and exploited.
Blizzard’s president Mike Morhaime made a statement on the official website and stated;
“This week, our security team found an unauthorized and illegal access into our internal network here at Blizzard. We quickly took steps to close off this access and began working with law enforcement and security experts to investigate what happened.”
Morhaime has stated that Blizzard has found that “no evidence that financial information such as credit cards, billing addresses, or real names were compromised” and that their “investigation is on-going, but so far nothing suggests that these pieces of information have been accessed.”
Blizzard has asked players and users to change their password on the website but have also stated that they will be prompting players on the North American servers to change their secret questions and answers through an automated process over the next few days.
The attackers stole a cryptographically scrambled list of passwords used on North American Battle.net accounts, hence the quick urge to get users to change their passwords.
This comes just a few days after Amazon and Apple have removed over the phone password resets on accounts after a hack to a tech writer for Wired.com saw all of his Apple and Amazon accounts taken over by hackers, and a week after Dropbox was also hacked.
