Last week we reported that Google were looking set to launch a range of Gift Cards for its Google Play media and App store, and today the company officially announced that customer in the US will now be able to purchase and give pre-paid gift card.
Google has finally officially announced the availability of Google Play gift cards which will come in $10, $25 and $50 denominations. The Gift cards will be available in a number of US store including Target, RadioShack and GameStop over the next few weeks but currently there is no word on any availability on stocking outside of the US.
As you would expect the Gift cards will allow users to purchase anything form the Google Play store including paid for apps, movies, music and eBooks via the download service.

Google Play – the former Android Market and one stop app shop for one of our most used smartphone and tablet platforms could soon get a high street style gift card system, much like that currently being enjoyed by owners of Apple gadgets and users of the iTunes multimedia superstore.
According to findings in the new developer’s kit for the Google Play Store, soon apps, games, movies, music and other digital content will be purchasable using a redeem feature, which suggests the possibility of a gift card service for our Android smartphones and slates.
The gift cards for iTunes can generally be picked up from supermarkets and clothing retailers and carry credit that can be exchanged for goodies for iPhone and iPad.
With Google currently on Apple’s heels with the best-selling Samsung Galaxy SIII packing masses of appeal as well as Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and new tablet tech such as the Google Nexus 7 troubling iPad sales with the latest and greatest Android version, 4.1 Jelly Bean, it was only a matter of time before Google took this next big step in turning it’s Android department store into a legit digital retailer.
Expect Apple to suitably up its iTunes game with the imminent arrival of the iOS 6 mobile software and its host gadget the iPhone 5 – as well as a few rumoured revisions and additions to the iPad family.
