The official TomTom app is now coming to Android in October after an announcement by TomTom at this week’s IFA electronics event in Germany.
TomTom will be previewing the official app on the Android SO this week at the IFA and will be set to release the actual app in October so Android customer can get the long awaited TomTom functionality.
The Android app will include lifetime map updates, IQ route planning, lane guidance, and spoken street names as well as its HD Traffic and Speed Cameras packages as in-app purchases within the Android application.
Corinne Vigreux, Managing Director at TomTom said in a statement: “We aim to make TomTom content and services available to as many devices and platforms as we can,”
“Bringing TomTom navigation to Android smartphones is, therefore, a significant milestone for us. ”
The TomTom App for the iPhone has been available for many years and was once the only of its kind for smartphone, but in recent years Google’s own free Google Maps app has been used as the default mapping and navigation system on android smartphones, so TomTom will have a hurdle to climb to convince customers to use their paid for app.
TomTom says that pricing and exact availability dates will be announced closer to the launch date.
