For a second we thought Nokia would leave us in the lurch with just the Lumia 920, but right at the end of its opening Nokia World presentation, it snuck in the Lumia 820.
As has been rumoured, the Lumia 820 joins the 920 as the Windows 8 equivalent of the current Lumia 800. While Nokia spent close to an hour waxing lyrical about the Lumia 920, it took around 10 minutes to brush over the new mid-range model – we’re going to need to wait a while to get the full lowdown on the specifications unfortunately.
Nokia did tell us that the 820 would keep the same 4.3-inch screen size, of the AMOLED variety and with a lower WXGA resolution than the Lumia 920’s HD-beating display. The screen does also feature Nokia’s ClearBlack technology, which will make text pin-sharp and allows the screen to automatically adjust brightness and tone according to the light you use the phone in. Unfortunately the PureMotion HD+ from the Lumia 920 won’t make an appearance on this phone as well.
Unlike the Lumia 800, 900 and 920, the new Lumia 820 has a removable back cover. Underneath you’ll find a 1650mAh battery – which we’re unsure about being removable – and a microSD card slot for expanding the storage. The rear shells are exchangeable, and Nokia showed off a whole host of colour ways to choose from: purple, red, black, grey, cyan, white and yellow.
Nokia will be bringing wireless charging to the Lumia 820 as well, although this isn’t built in and will need to be purchased additionally as an exchangeable cover – no news on just how much that will cost, but it’s cool that you have the option to add it if you want to.
The 820 also includes NFC connectivity amongst its list of wireless capabilities, which will allow it to wirelessly pair up with a host of new accessories that Nokia showed off, including docks from JBL and headphones from Monster.
As with the Lumia 920, no price or release date was announced. We’ll update you with the info as and when we get it.
