HP could be gearing up to enter the smartphone market again, after its venture with WebOS and the Pre phones failed to gain a good foothold in the market against the likes of Android and the iPhone.
The company’s CEO, Meg Whitman, recently spoke about the need to get back in the smartphone game. She spoke of eventually launching another HP branded smartphone, and no sooner had she spoken, a brand new HP smartphone appeared in test results.
Somewhere in the world, somebody has an early test model of what we’re guessing will be HP’s way back into the smartphone market, and right now they’re testing it using the GLBenchmark software. The phone is oddly codenamed ‘Bender’, and is running Android version 4.0, aka Ice Cream Sandwich.
Although it’s likely to be way from the finished product, the specifications revealed in the tests show HP’s secret phone to be very powerful and interesting indeed. It’s got a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor at its core, along with a screen resolution of 1366 x 720 pixels, which puts it into the HD category.
The phone is currently running Android version 4.0.4, although this could change to become Jelly Bean 4.1 between now and whenever HP decides to bring the phone to market. We’d say this phone could become real at the Mobile World Congress event next February, so stay tuned!
Can HP bring it back and compete in the smartphone market again, or is it too little, too late? Let us know your thoughts on our comments below or via our @Gadget_Helpline Twitter page or Official Facebook group.
