Apple has issued a statement in response to the slew of complaints made today by those who have updated to iOS 6 and found the new Maps app to be sub-par.
The Cupertino Company ditched the long-standing Google Maps app for its latest software in favour of its own solution, and unfortunately it’s turned out to be less polished than most fans would have liked. Complaints have ranged from missing towns to jumbled up 3D maps.
Now Apple has issued a response, mostly to enforce that its Maps app is a new service and will of course get better with time. Apple also explains that Maps is a cloud based service, and so the more people use it, the better it will get.
The full statement reads as follows:
“Customers around the world are upgrading to iOS 6 with over 200 new features including Apple Maps, our first map service,” said spokeswoman Trudy Miller. “We are excited to offer this service with innovative new features like Flyover, turn by turn navigation, and Siri integration. We launched this new map service knowing it is a major initiative and that we are just getting started with it. Maps is a cloud-based solution and the more people use it, the better it will get. We appreciate all of the customer feedback and are working hard to make the customer experience even better.”
Further to Apple’s statement, AllthingsD has a source who claims Apple has already made sure its dedicated Maps app team is on lockdown right now in order to fix the reported problems as soon as possible.
It could be that Apple resolves many of these first day issues by means of a minor update to iOS, which in theory it could get out within one week, depending on the nature of the issues, of course. We’ll be waiting with baited breath to see what Apple can come up with, all the while Google is rumoured to be waiting for a standalone Google Maps app for iOS to be approved for the App Store by Apple.
