If you’ve tuned in to the tech news in the past few weeks, chances are you’ve heard plenty about Apple’s new smartphone. The iPhone 5 can’t really be avoided wherever you go at the moment, much to the disdain of a certain portion of the public.
Whether you’re an ardent Android fan, you hate the whole obsession with Apple, or you’re considering the iPhone 5 but want to know what else there is, here are five of the best iPhone 5 alternatives.
Nokia’s new flagship may not yet be available to buy, but it’s got everything that makes a high-end smartphone and a little bit more. Apple may profess a special sort of design ethic, but we reckon Nokia has done a great job with the Lumia 920’s looks. It’s sleek, it’s well shaped to fit the hand, and it looks great. Nokia’s years of camera expertise means that the PureView technology in this phone will easily make it a good replacement for your compact digital camera.
What’s it got over the iPhone 5? Wireless charging, NFC connectivity
Samsung’s flagship was out long before the iPhone 5, but that doesn’t mean it’s dated compared – far from it. Samsung’s flagship rocks an impressive camera, blazing fast processor and a stunning screen. It’s also got nice and easy ways to share your content via DLNA to TVs, tablets and laptops, rather than needing a third party app or some expensive cables.
What’s it got over the iPhone 5? Expandable storage (up to 64GB), clever motion gestures and controls
With Windows Phone 8 on the way there are some fantastic phones to launch with it. HTC’s new flagship boasts a stunning Super LCD 2 display with a higher resolution and much higher pixel density when compared to Apple’s latest offering. Its front-facing camera is also very impressive, toting 2-megapixel stills, Full HD 1080p video capture and a super wide angle lens for fitting groups in on video calls.
What’s it got over the iPhone 5? Larger, sharper screen, Full HD video on the front camera
LG’s latest flagship smartphone packs a punch in the processing and camera departments, and has been given plenty of interesting tweaks and software features as well. Apple’s 8-megapixel camera is very good, but LG has opted to better it with an impressive 13-megapixel rear camera on the Optimus G. It’s going to launch running Ice Cream Sandwich, with the promise of an upgrade to Android Jelly Bean very soon.
What’s it got over the iPhone 5? Larger, higher resolution still images, MHL for easy video out
We’re pretty sure that no smartphone would want to take on this beast in the battery stakes. With a giant 3,300 mAh battery – the iPhone 5 has a 1,440 mAh cell – Motorola promises the phone will always see you through a whole day, and with light to medium usage it should do two days from a full charge. It’s also got a stunning display, with a HD resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and a pixel density that’s very close to the iPhone 5’s Retina Display.
What’s it got over the iPhone 5? Longer battery life, expandable storage
Of course, the Apple fan will point out that the iPhone 5 will also beat each of these phones in different areas. We’re not saying the iPhone 5 is naff – it’s far from it – we’re showcasing a selection of some other fine smartphones that are out there and coming out, for those who like to look around before they buy.
