Google’s shiny new software update for Android devices has started to reach older Nexus products, with reports of both the Galaxy Nexus and the newer Nexus 7 receiving the new flavour of Jelly Bean.
The software giant launched Android 4.2 alongside the Nexus 4 smartphone and Nexus 10 tablet, and on the day that both launch here in the UK, the software has started to roll out to other devices. Reports of 4.2 landing on the Galaxy Nexus were first to come in, with the handsets that were originally bought directly from Google – aka the “Takju” models – being first to get the update.
At the moment these are the only handsets receiving the update over the air, so if you bought your phone elsewhere, on contract perhaps, you won’t be able to update officially. However, as Phandroid kindly points out, Google offers the file in order to flash Android 4.2 onto other versions of the Galaxy Nexus, should you be brave enough.
Download links for Android 4.2 on the ASUS-built Nexus 7 tablet have also surfaced at Android Police, although at the moment we’re not seeing any signs of the update arriving over the air for any tablets. We’ve checked ours and at the moment we’re getting nothing, nada, zilch.
If you were taken in by the new Photo Spheres feature, predictive swipe keyboard and overall speed of Android 4.2 back last month when it was unveiled, you can of course plump for either the LG-made Nexus 4 or the Samsung-made Nexus 10, should you wish to get the latest vanilla version of Android.
