Comet confirms ‘Fire Sale’ is coming soon

  • by

Ailing UK tech retailer Comet has confirmed via its website that it will be starting a “fire sale” very soon in order to sell off its stock.

Since the news of the company going into administration hit last week, rumours of giant sales and super-cheap gadgets have been rife all across the country. The company has decided to speak out and confirm the rumours, although it’s not all good news.

A pretty long Q & A posted to the retailer’s website yesterday confirms that the sale is “coming soon”, although if you delve a little deeper into the information you’ll find that gift cards won’t be accepted:

“The Administrators are currently considering the position in relation to gift cards and gift vouchers and at this stage they cannot be used to pay for items,”

“The Administrators are reviewing this position urgently.”

While getting a gadget bargain is amongst the greatest things in the world, we’d point out that Comet won’t be able to fulfil any sort of warranty due to its current state. The website does confirm however that a manufacturer’s warranty will be provided with each product – although here at Gadget Helpline we’ve already had cases where customers have been refused a return by Comet, instead being pointed towards the manufacturer, who then advised to speak to Comet – nightmare!

Comet has reached the end of a rocky road, after being bought out by the equity group OpCapita for just £2 last year. The same company took over the GAME chain of stores, which also went into administration a few months ago. Being unable to pay for its stock up-front led the retailer to a position where it was unable to sell some high-profile products, which has ultimately contributed to its demise.

An estimated 6,000 jobs are currently at risk, unless a buyer can be found for the company.
