UPDATE: Browser-based Spotify app now launched

  • by

Spotify is to launch a new application today that allows you to log in and stream music through your device’s web browser, according to new information.

Tech site The Verge quotes sources who are close to the company who have let slip their plans to launch a new “web app” that can be used with ease on a number of different devices. Spotify already exists as a downloadable app or program for Windows, Mac and mobile platforms such as iOS and Android, but its users want something simpler.

One of Spotify’s key competitors Rdio has been using a web-based system for a long time now, and naturally something similar has become one of the most requested features by Spotify users. Just like the desktop app for Windows and Mac, the new app will be free to use and won’t require a Premium account subscription as the mobile apps do.

The idea is that you’ll be able to simply head over to the website and log in using your Spotify credentials or link to your Facebook page, then start listening right away. However, the feature set will be limited compared to the desktop apps, with Radio, search, playlist editing and adding and the “What’s New” section only. The social aspect of Spotify, with playlists linked from Facebook and sharing options, appears to be missing from the web app.

In theory a web app would mean that smartphone and tablet users could use Spotify on the go without the need for a Premium account to use the official app, although this would all depend on which technology Spotify has employed to create the site – we’d imagine they wouldn’t want their Premium subscriptions being cannibalised by a free to use web app.

Spotify’s browser-based app is said to launch later today in beta form, which means there will be issues that need ironing out. We’re not sure how you’ll be able to sign up to the beta program yet, but as soon as we know we’ll update this post.

UPDATE: Open Spotify has now launched and is available to log in and use through most web browsers. Simply head over to play.spotify.com and sign in to get started. As expected, the user interface is a simplified version of the desktop app, offering Radio, Playlists, What’s New and New and Recommended content. Check it out and let us know what you think.
