Samsung’s Windows Phone 8 offering in the smartphone world, the Samsung Ativ S, has been heavily delayed since its initial announcement, but after many thought the smartphone would be delayed until 2013 Samsung has confirmed that they will indeed be releasing the Ativ S before 2012 is out.
The handset was initially slated to go on sale at the end of October alongside the rest of the Windows Phone 8 release handsets (the Nokia Lumia 820+ 920 and the HTC 8X) but it was then put back to November and since then it’s been delayed again.
The news has come from TechRadar who states that Samsung has confirmed that the phone will indeed be released in the UK by the end of the year. They said: “We’ve heard from HQ that the product will be available by the end of this year.”
No further details were mentioned about the release and with Christmas just 3 weeks away and the end of the year only 4 away, it doesn’t leave much time for Samsung to get the handset out there.
When the phone was delayed past November it led many to think Samsung would move the handset’s release back to late January to coincide with the Consumer Electronics Show, which is usually a showcase for new and incoming tech.
The Samsung Ativ S features a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display, a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel camera and a choice of either 16 or 32GB of internal storage. The 8 megapixel camera is capable of shooting 1080p videos at 30fps, whereas a 1.9 megapixel secondary camera will be used for video calling purposes.
The handset does have stiff competition from the Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 and the Windows Phone 8X by HTC, but Samsung will be very keen to get a hold on the latest smartphone OS as it has done with Android and its Galaxy series of phones.
