Avatar bought 1 million times on Blu-ray in the UK – Sales up 8.9% in 2012

James Cameron’s Avatar has become the first Blu-ray to sell over 1 million copies in the UK. The 2009 smash hit film can add the GB Blu-ray sales to its list of accomplishments, including being the highest grossing movie ever with a cool $2.8 billion taken at the box office.

However, 2012 belonged to the caped crusader himself, Batman, as the Dark Knight rises, the third film in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, took the gong for highest Blu-ray sales in the UK in the last year.

Also on the board for Blu-ray sales was Avengers Assemble in second place, with PrometheusSherlock Holmes and The Amazing Spider-Man filling up the rest of the top 5.

2012 seems to be the year that Blu-ray finally took off after a less than gigantic boom that was expected, with Blu-ray disc sales up 8.9% across the board according to figures supplied by the British Video Association.

This basically means that in light of the massive increase in popularity of streaming services such as Lovefilm and Netflix, people are still buying movies and TV shows on Blu-ray and DVD.

Additionally, Blu-ray sales made up 30.1 per cent of the top 10 films from 2013, which is up from 25.8 per cent in 2011. These figures account for a lot as many films are still not available on Blu-ray, including Disney classics and some major recent studio releases.

When we are talking about Blu-ray there is always a little corner dedicated to 3D titles, where Martin Scorsese’s Hugo came in as the bestselling 3D film just ahead of PrometheusAvengers AssembleUnderworld Awakening and Avatar.
