Google’s next update to Android will be to version 5.0, aka Key Lime Pie, and it will arrive between March and May this year.
From Google’s sweet-toothed naming strategy for Android it was already pretty obvious that the next version would be called Key Lime Pie, but now that’s been confirmed by Qualcomm, who are one of the largest processor makers for Android and other mobile devices.
The company’s latest roadmap shows both where they’re going in terms of new chips and what Google is going to do with Android, thus revealing the Key Lime Pie name.
The Q2 timeframe that’s shown in the roadmap pretty much confirms that Google will launch the major upgrade at its annual I/O Developers Conference in May, which is scheduled for May 15th to 17th. Historically Google launches new versions of Android alongside a new Nexus device at each I/O conference, then pushing the update to older Nexus devices shortly after.
This news in theory means that Nexus 4, Nexus 10 and Nexus 7 owners will certainly be getting an upgrade to Key Lime Pie before the end of May. The Galaxy Nexus will be a probable update, although we’re not sure if Google will stretch back to the Nexus S – it depends how advanced the new software is.
Qualcomm reportedly reached out to blogs in an attempt to get the roadmap taken down, so it seems that Google isn’t too happy about its secret being let out of the bag early.
