Dyson has revealed its latest invention, and in typical fashion it’s something that you didn’t know you wanted until it existed. The Dyson Airblade tap both washes and dries your hands, in the sink.
Whilst hoovers, fridges and the like aren’t all that exciting, a new invention from Dyson always gets us pretty excited. The company has been teasing something new and no-doubt awesome for the past few weeks, and now the mystery product has been unveiled.
Sir James Dyson proudly revealed the product last night, which on the surface doesn’t look like anything more than a nice, polished silver tap. However, it’s a tap with a difference. It uses Dyson’s patented Airblade technology to ‘scrape’ moisture off your hands, leaving them nice and dry within seconds.
The inner workings of the tap provide both hot and cold water for washing your hands and a feed of high velocity air to dry them with afterwards, all coming through the ‘wings’ of the tap.
The company has been working on the project for a long time now, with an estimated £40 million ($60m) spent to date in research and development. The result? A tap that costs $1,590 (£999).
Whilst it might seem like a ludicrous amount to spend on a tap for your bathroom, if you compare the price to that of a regular Airblade hand dryer – around £800-£1000 – it’s actually not that bad. And when you think of those precious steps you’ll save walking from the sink to the hand dryer, it’s practically a bargain – okay, we’re not that lazy.
In order to perfect the tap hand dryer Dyson says its teams simulated over a billion hand washes and dries. Just the thought of how prune-like their hands must have been afterwards is making us shiver.
