Spotify has reported that this week it has reached a milestone of six million paying subscribers.
The internet’s leading streaming music provider Spotify was launched in 2006 and now delivers over 20 million tunes from popular artists both contemporary and classic to the ears of 24 million active account holders who use its Windows and Mac OS desktop software as well as mobile applications for devices running Android, Apple iOS, BlackBerry OS and Windows Phone.
A quarter of those audiophiles have now been enticed to pay monthly for Spotify subscriptions, which offer ad-free listening and unrestricted access to all the songs, stations, social features and in-app extras for £4.99 for Unlimited and £9.99 for Premium packages in the UK. Unlimited offers just that; a no holds barred soundtrack with no time limitations and a seemingly endless selection of tracks available. Premium offers the same but adds access to the service on mobile devices, be it smartphone or tablet.
Achieving this figure proves that despite a wave of contenders lining up for a spot on the streaming media market (including brands such as Rdio, with Google and Apple reportedly also jumping on to the trend soon) Spotify is still the go-to provider for those of us seeking web-based on-demand music – and we’re willing to pay up for the tried and tested quality and service.
