Samsung has the S4, HTC has the One and Sony has the Xperia Z. While the three biggest Android manufacturers have showed off their flagship phones for the year, we’ve yet to hear from another big name in the industry: Motorola.
After being acquired by Google last year, Motorola have turned out a series of fairly disinteresting phones with a few novel features, including large batteries, some Intel processors and fairly close to stock Android. This year, Motorola may reveal their first really interesting phone, which is rumoured to be called the X Phone.
This week, we’ve had our first purported render of the device leak. According to an anonymous tipster speaking to GSM Arena, the X Phone will include a Snapdragon 800 chipset and a 4.7″ 1280 x 768 display.
That’d make the X Phone faster than the Snapdragon 600 equipped Galaxy S4 and HTC One, and way faster than the Nexus 4 and Xperia Z using last year’s Snapdragon S4 Pro processors. The display isn’t up to spec though, considering that the new standard from all three big releases this year is Full HD, 1920 x 1080.
The X Phone does make up for it in one big way though – the inclusion of a 4,000 mAh battery that, coupled with the efficient processor and less high resolution display, allow for nearly double the battery life of any of its competitors.
The X Phone may also include an IP57 certification, meaning that the phone would be waterproof and dustproof (something that the case of the Xperia Z also featured). However, unlike the Xperia Z or the Galaxy S4, there’s no option for additional micro SD storage.
As Motorola’s ownership by Google would suggest, the phone would also come with stock or near-stock Android 4.2.
The Motorola X Phone is slated to be announced at the Google I/O conference starting on May 15th, and begin shipping in early June. It’s also rumoured to be available at the same low price point as the Nexus 4 – in the UK, that’d be £239 for the lower storage option and £279 for the more capacious variant.
