EA to bring an end to SimCity Social and other Facebook games

  • by

Electronic Arts has announced the forthcoming closures of several once-popular Facebook games, including SimCity Social.

The games developer will be closing a number of games that fall under the Playfish brand, namely; SimCity Social, The Sims Social and Pet Society. All three will be closed by June 14th at the latest, so if you’re addicted to any of these titles then we’d suggest weaning yourself off of them now, before things get heavy.

EA stated in a recent blog post that the number of people logging in to Facebook to play these games has been dwindling over the past year or so, with the current figures simply being too low to warrant them supporting the games any further.

“We are informing players of the difficult decision to retire some of our Facebook games: The Sims Social, SimCity Social, and Pet Society,” EA wrote on its blog.

“After millions of people initially logged in to play these games, the number of players and amount of activity has fallen off. For people who have seen other recent shutdowns of social games, perhaps this is not surprising.”

Of the three mentioned, SimCity Social seems to have been the most popular title, and we recall the hype generated by its availability on the social network under a year ago.

EA bought the Playfish brand in 2009 for a stonking $300 million and now due to low demand the fruits of the game studio’s labours are being shut down. EA has confirmed that other Facebook games from Popcap, another studio it owns, will continue as normal. Popcap titles include Bejeweled Blitz and the forthcoming Plants Vs Zombies Adventures.
