We’re under the impression that Samsung will soon roll out a new range of tablets; its third generation of Galaxy Tabs. However, something different has just leaked and caught our attention. We’re hearing reports of a flagship Android tablet that goes by the codename ‘ROMA’.
The news comes from Samsung-obsessed site SamMobile, which tends to be spot-on a lot of the time when it comes to rumoured devices. They say that the tablet will be based on the impressive Google Nexus 10, which means that same 10-inch display will be present, sporting a high resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels.
Inside the tablet there will be one of Samsung’s newest chips – the Exynos 5 – which is a 1.7GHz dual-core and is paired with 2GB of RAM. We’re also told that a huge 9,000 mAh battery will be crammed in to provide plenty of juice, alongside 3G and 4G cellular connectivity.
At the moment we only know of a 16GB version, although we would be willing to hedge our bets on there also being 32 and 64GB versions to make up the range. Unlike the Nexus 10, the ROMA will feature a micro SD card slot to allow users to expand the storage further, which is a big bonus. That card slot will accommodate micro SD cards up to a huge 128GB, according to the report, which is something we don’t often see support for in mobile devices.
Dual cameras are also present, with a 5 megapixel snapper on the back and a 1.9 megapixel sensor on the front for video calling.
The tablet looks to be slender at 8.4mm thick, and weighs considerably less than the iPad at 583g, which we suspect is due to the plastic materials used in the construction. If the above image is of the real deal, then Samsung will be using a physical home button and touch buttons for the menu and back functions as it does on its Android smartphones. This seems an odd move, and is not something Samsung has done on a 10-inch tablet before, so we’re inclined to think the image is faked.
Finally, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean will be the operating system of choice for Samsung’s new high-end tablet. The latest version of Android will be paired with Samsung’s new TouchWiz user interface, and so we’re expecting the functionality of the device to match that of the new Galaxy S4.
