HTC One to get Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 update

HTC’s flagship One smartphone looks set to receive the current holy grail of Android updates – version 4.2.2 ‘Jelly Bean’ – in the coming weeks, as revealed by a loose-lipped developer.

As GottaBeMobile points out, one of HTC’s own developers recently tweeted to say that Google’s latest version of Android would be arriving on the One at the “end of this month, beginning of the next”.

Being a developer for HTC is a good sign, but GottaBeMobile refers to Twitter user ‘@LlabTooFeR’ as a “notorious insider”, whatever that means. It seems this fellow has a good knowledge of what goes on behind the scenes at HTC, so we’re inclined to believe the update is indeed on the way.

The HTC One does of course run Android Jelly Bean software right out of the box, but that’s 4.1.2 – a slightly older version. Google is now up to Android 4.2.2, which brings a number of additions including ‘pages’ on the lockscreen which give the user multiple pages for widgets such as calendar, text messages and calculator.

Android 4.2.2 is also looking set to land on the Samsung Galaxy S3 shortly, with the software itself leaking out earlier this week. Samsung looks set to bring some features from the S4 down to last year’s S3, though we’re not sure whether the Korean manufacturer will manage to beat HTC to the punch.

However, HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S3 owners won’t be able to claim they have the latest version of Android for long, with Google looking ready to launch Android 4.3 next month.
