Sony will launch its first ‘phablet’ device on June 25th, according to a leaked event invite along with new details revealed to VR-Zone by insiders.
We recently learned of a device known as the ‘Togari’ that was said to be in the works at Sony HQ; a monstrous Android smartphone with a 6.44-inch Full HD display. Well, according to new information the phone will launch as the Xperia ZU, joining the Xperia Z and Xperia ZR as the third ‘Z’ variant.
Just like the Z and ZR, the Xperia ZU will boast IP58 certification and will therefore work underwater – 30 metres at up to 1 metre depth, to be precise. This will allow the phone to be used for underwater snaps and videos, although sources say Sony is swapping out the 13 megapixel camera it now often uses in high-end smartphones for an 8 megapixel one.
The display should more than make up for that, with a 6.44-inch Full HD display sporting Sony’s latest Triluminos, X-Reality and Mobile Bravia Engine 2 tech all on board to make the visual performance of the phone absolutely tip-top. Triluminos is used in a lot of Sony’s new laptops and TVs, so we can imagine movies and games on the Xperia ZU will be amazing.
Finally, the insider was able to confirm that the ZU will pack the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, clocked at a huge 2.3GHz. This is a clock speed higher than we’ve seen before on a smartphone and leads us to be a little dubious about this particular detail, but we’ll reserve judgement until the launch.
The Xperia ZU is turning out to be an absolute monster and we can’t wait to see it in the flesh. Hopefully the June 25th launch date is accurate so we won’t have to wait much longer.
