Last night Sony took to the stage at their E3 annual press event to cover all of their big news and features and whilst all eyes may have been firmly on the PS4 and its finer points, Sony had a host of other games and features for its other consoles, the PS3 and PS Vita.
The PS Vita had a small showing from Sony, who were keen to re-assure us that with the Vita coming into its second year on sale, is still a console that the company is focusing on.
Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, took to the stage and confirmed Sony’s commitment to the handheld console and to talk up the Vita. Tretton stated that “on average PS Vita owners have bought more than 10 games” and of these titles 60% were purchased through the PS Store.
Tretton also promised that they will be “Tapping into an incredible pool of games” and that these games will “Only get stronger in 2013”.
New games-wise, Sony displayed information on Counter Psy, Destiny of Spirits, Doki Doki Universe and both KillZone Mercenary and Tearaway, all of which will be coming in the next year. However, it’s some of the re-mastered titles that really interested us as Sony announced that reworked versions of God of War HD 1 & 2 will be coming to the Vita, as well as (our personal favourite!) Final Fantasy X and X-2 HD, which will see us all reliving Tidus’ adventure including Sin and Blitzball gameplay. We cannot wait.
What’s more; HD remakes of Flower and Dead Nation were also announced.
Whilst we do get excited about the remakes, one game that really did get our attention was a brand new instalment of The Walking Dead which was announced for the Vita. “The Walking Dead: 400 Days” will be coming this summer to Sony’s handheld and there will be a host of bundled content with the game including the complete first season of the TV series plus other unannounced content.
However, the Vita’s role throughout 2013/14 will undoubtedly be as the “ultimate companion device for PS4” with Sony announcing that the PS Vita will be the accessory to have with the console. The PS Vita will be able to “tap into” the whole catalogue of PS4 games.
At the event the Vita was a bit of a side note, but with the functionality of the console now enhancing the PS4 we could see a turning point in sales for the little handheld console.
