After the explosion of crazy that was Google revealing Android KitKat, one other very exciting new piece of Android related news showed itself – the Nexus 5.
You see, with every new version of Android announced, Google puts up a huge statue of its sweet-flavoured logo right on the front lawn of its headquarters in California. It also videos this event and puts it online for the world to see, and we were recently treated to the erection of a brown KitKat Android statue on the front lawn. Google employees were spotted whooping, clapping and taking pictures. One particular Google employee seemed to be holding a phone which we’ve never seen before and sure enough, the word ‘Nexus’ was branded on the back. Here he is:
Since then the Nexus 5 rumour mill has gone into overdrive and numerous designers have come up with 3D renders based on the phone being held in the video, giving us a good idea of what the next Nexus phone could look like. The image above is one such render, showing that the Nexus 5 could potentially ditch the glittery glass back for a smoothed, black plastic casing instead. If accurate, Google will continue to use LG to manufacture the device and the Nexus branding will become even bigger across the back.
Going by the phone held by the lucky Google employee and the subsequent render, the rear camera looks to have a much wider angle lens. There are also dual speaker grilles on the back and the same layout of buttons and sockets as the Nexus 4.
As for specifications, we’re still none the wiser. The rumour mill suggests a 5-inch Full HD display which of course makes sense as both a logical upgrade from the Nexus 4’s 720p display and matches the latest smartphones from other brands. The latest quad-core processor from Qualcomm is also said to be inside – the Snapdragon 800 – alongside an upgraded camera and of course, Android 4.3.
Going back in time, every Nexus phone has been launched between November and January. The last two – the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 4 – both launched in November, so we’re hoping to hear more from Google and LG about the Nexus 5 around October time.
