It might be a little late to the party, but Nokia has finally launched its first ever tablet device: the Nokia Lumia 2520.
Heavily rumoured and even pictured in recent weeks, the Lumia 2520 is a Windows RT tablet which resembles a giant Lumia smartphone. It’s curvy, it’s colourful and it looks like it’s going to fit right in to Nokia’s growing range of Microsoft-filled devices.
Despite having a strong partnership with Microsoft, Nokia is effectively taking its partner on at its own game here – specifically targeting the new Surface 2. Nokia’s offering matches Microsoft’s so closely in terms of specifications that they may well be the same inside – a vivid 10-inch Full HD display, a powerful 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 chip from Qualcomm, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and a card slot which can accommodate a further 32GB of memory.
The tablet runs Windows RT 8.1, Microsoft’s latest slimmed-down version of Windows 8 for tablets. Nokia has paired it up with an impressive-looking keyboard case called the Power Keyboard and a flip cover, allowing the Lumia 2520 to be propped up and typed on just like a laptop. The keyboard, priced at $149 in the US, provides two extra USB ports and an extra 5 hours of battery life.
There’s also 4G and Wi-Fi connectivity (depending on the model you go for, of course), a 6.7-megapixel rear camera with Zeiss optics and an f/1.9 lens, a 2 megapixel front facing camera and a brand new Camera app to suit the two snappers.
Nokia’s first ever tablet will come in a range of its now trademark Lumia colours, including red, cyan blue, white and black. The only quoted price right now is $499, with the US, UK and Finland being the first countries to get their hands on the new tablet later this year.
