You can count the number of months the iPhone 5S has been on sale on one hand, yet we’re already seeing reports about the iPhone 6. Apple will launch two new iPhone models late in 2014 with larger screen sizes than we’ve ever seen before on an Apple mobile, according to “sources familiar with the plans”.
Bloomberg reports that the Cupertino company will again launch two new smartphones at the same autumn event next year, with one offering a screen of 4.7-inches and the other a 5.5-inch. Both are considerably larger than the iPhone 5 and 5S’ 4-inch Retina display, which Apple hailed as being the perfect size to fit your hands at the time of launch.
The company has long been adamant that phones should not be as big as their rivals’ products, such as Samsung’s huge 5.95-inch Galaxy Note 3, but it’s hard to deny the success of Android and its ever-increasing market of larger smartphones. These days 4.7-inches is something of an average screen size for an Android phone, with most now tipping 5-inches or slightly more, so it could be about time that Apple joined in on the act.
Bloomberg’s source, who of course wished to remain anonymous, also claimed that the two phones will feature a glass front which curves towards the edges, giving a more rounded feel. They also declared that a new type of pressure sensor will be built in to the screens of future iPhone models, allowing the device to sense between heavy and light touches. Unfortunately this new tech won’t feature in Apple’s 2014 iPhones, however.
Reports of larger iPhones have been circulating for the past 2 years, though Apple has only increase the iPhone screen size once: going from the 3.5-inch display it used from the original iPhone through to the iPhone 4S up to a 4-inch Retina display in the iPhone 5. Not so long ago the Wall Street Journal also reported that Apple was testing iPhone screen sizes up to 6-inches, so it may have not yet settled on the perfect size for next year’s iPhone update.
Now that the general public appear to be more accustomed to larger phones it seems as though Apple is getting ready to bring its own larger offering to the market. February 2014 should see the rumour mill crank things up a notch.
