Sony is still yet to launch the PS4 in its games console-loving homeland of Japan, but that hasn’t stopped the next-gen console making headway in terms of sales. Between the US launch on November 15th last year and February 8th 2014, some 5.3 million consoles have been sold.
With the Japanese launch looming at the end of this week, Sony has revealed its current sales total for the new console. Microsoft is yet to show current sales figures, with the last known value for the Xbox One being around the 3 million sales mark at the end of 2013. At that time Sony revealed it had sold 4.2 million consoles to date and so already had quite a lead on Microsoft. The combined launch and Christmas rush has of course now passed, but figures show that Sony has gradually added another million or so in sales since Christmas.
With the next-gen war well and truly raging between Sony and Microsoft, many are leaving Nintendo out of things. As a point of comparison, the third major company in the console market expects to sell 2.8 million of its Wii U consoles within the next year, and so Sony has achieved almost double that within just three months with the PS4.

Speaking of the recent sales figures, Andrew House, President of Sony Computer Entertainment said, “I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season,”
“We are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation fans. 22 February sees the launch of PS4 in Japan, and I’m looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement.”
After a somewhat cruel 3 month wait, the PS4 will finally arrive in Japan on February 22nd. With the company holding something of a cult following in its home nation in terms of gaming, we’re expecting to see sales figures rise dramatically within the months following the final major launch.
We’re hoping that once Sony gets the Japanese launch out of the way some exciting new titles will be revealed, as the PS4’s launch title line-up was one of our only gripes when the console hit the UK last November.
