Netflix Price Increase to Effect Joining Members Only

After recently trialling new price structures in the United States and Ireland, streaming service Netflix has announced it will be boosting subscription fees for joining customers.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings revealed the price hike in the company’s quarterly earnings report stating “Our current view is to do a one or two dollar increase – depending on the country – later this quarter for new members only”. The information is rather vague at the moment but seems to be a firm way forward after different pricing systems were tested without much fixed decision.

Let’s not forget it was only a few months ago, in January, that a three tier price system was being mulled over for Netflix, this now appears to have been dismissed and replaced by a general price rise which should take effect from July. Not the best of announcements for those considering signing up after that point, but existing subscribers can rest assured of no increases, at least until the company’s next financial review.

With profits reported as up by $3-million since Netflix’s last count it appears that business has definitely picked up since the US-based streaming video service arrived in the UK and Ireland in January 2012. In other recent news, rival British company LoveFilm was recently snapped up and integrated into Amazon’s Instant Video, so we can likely expect more to report from the renewed battle between the two leading streamers in the coming months.

Netflix is currently available on a range of devices including Laptop and PC, Android and iOS smartphones and tablets and current generation games consoles.
