Although it’s been a lot less than secret for a while now, the Amazon Fire Phone has finally emerged in the last few days, as it was announced by Amazon CEO Steve Bezos at a recent exclusive event in Seattle. Although the company had repeatedly denied the existence of such a phone, the rumor mill ultimately foresaw the truth, and confirmed much of the speculation whipped up by various leaks.
The phone is another high quality iPhone competitor, incorporating not only cutting edge technology but also a heavy duty structure. The phone is swaddled in a layer of strong Gorilla Glass 3 on the face and the rear, and includes a sturdy single home button similarly to the iPhone.
Specifications include a 4.7 inch IPS LCD screen on the front, but one of the major inclusion is four front facing cameras, confirming the rumours heard earlier, most likely these will be utilised by apps which allow either multiple image capture or even eye recognition, plus you also get a 13MP rear facing camera for real photography, which comes with optical image stabilisation and an f/2.0 lens. The lens gives the phone the widest aperture of any smartphone camer currently available.
The chassis specifications are also pretty spectacular, sporting dual stereo speakers from Dolby digital, plus the chassis itself is made of anodized aluminium, which combined with the Gorilla Glass gives the internal components great protection.
Those internals aren’t bad either, a quad core 2.2 GHz processor serves as the main brain of the phone, backed up by 2GB of RAM and an Adreno 330 GPU. The OS is a tweaked copy of Android, optimised for use with Amazon’s systems such as their app store and market.
This means that you’ll be able to put your phone next to a speaker, run a small app and boom, the Amazon store page for the song will come up. The same thing happens when you snap an image of a tv show straight from the screen, so if you’re desperate to get hold of your new favourite song or show the phone can get you on the right track.
Although the phone isn’t yet coming to the UK watch this space, we’ll make a big song and dance if this amazing device becomes available outside the US. IF you happen to be in the US you can grab an Amazon Fire Phone on an AT&T contract for $199 on July 25.
