The latest batch of rumors are just surfacing on the new Nexus 9 from HTC. Codenamed ‘Volantis’, the device has been seen before in previous leaks, but according to new sources, these may have been either fake or hugely exaggerated.
We recently reported on the device around a week ago, responding to the original leaks which came at the time, but now it seems these may have been debunked via a more reliable source, @evleaks on Twitter.
The source at @evleaks has said that previous renders of the device may have been dubious, or even fake, so while we don’t know what the device is going to look like, the monstrous specs have been detailed. Hopefully these are correct.
The detailed specs are at the top end of the current tablet range. First off the Nexus 9 is orchestrated by the powerful 64-bit Tegra K1 processor from Nvidia and 5GB of RAM. That’s an awful lot of processing power. Nvidia themselves bill the Tegra as ‘the universe’s most advanced mobile processor’. The source did say that this configuration may be ‘non-final’ so we could expect a drop to just 4GB of RAM, since the 64-bit processor allows for more than 4GB.
Additionally, test models of the Nexus 9 are allegedly fitted with a 5MP camera, but @evleaks does say that this may be increased to 8MP, again on release. This camera supposedly is able to shoot in 1080p, and with that processor and RAM backing that up it may be possible. The device is also expected to include 64GB of memory to store those massive photo files.
Speaking of photos, the source also posted this image of the device.
It’s not much but you can see a few signs of the device’s Android internals, the ‘Flounder’ keyword being previously associated with the Nexus 8, with the other being an indicator of Android Silver, backing up rumors that the Nexus 8 will be a ‘stock’ Android device.
The tablet is also billed to include an 8.9 inch display, and at the moment (for testing purposes) it’s equipped with a 1680 x 1050 screen, but the device may be released with a far more detailed 2560 x 1600 display.
So, there you have it, some of the most ambitious specs we’ve seen for a mobile device in recent times. If it’s true, and the Nexus 9 really is that powerful, it could be a major contender on release.
