Abused Emoji allow kids to speak out about suffering via iPhone

There’s no doubt that smartphones have evolved the way we express ourselves. But how do you express yourself in an age of digital messaging if you’re a youngster dealing with something so traumatic that you simply can’t put it into words?

A Swedish children’s charity called BRIS has an idea and has released a selection of emoji, or picture characters, which allow kids to share their feelings visually and alert others if they are suffering abuse.

“Abused Emoji” are initially available for Apple iOS devices and allow kids to swap out their standard iPhone keyboard for a set of character symbols customised from ones they might commonly use in their day to day communications with pals, but instead of the usual ‘smileys’ the ones on offer here all suggest themes of child abuse and threat.

The symbols are fairly open to interpretation and some are downright disturbing and sure to draw concern from any recipient. They feature no words but give a clear message that something isn’t right with some of the graphics depicting physical violence (faces with bruised eyes), verbal abuse (sad child with expletive speech bubble directed at them), suicidal thoughts (boy with a skull think bubble above him), alcoholic parents (child and an imposing adult with a glass) and feelings of worthlessness (which you can work out for yourself).

Abused Emoji is another step towards making our tech more accessible to those suffering in silence. Facebook recently added a feature allowing users to report upsetting statuses and get help for friends who may be in need. We live in a world with so many ways to communicate and interact people it’s good to see stuff like this is being addressed.
