Online retailer Amazon is expected to host the world’s top technology journalists on Wednesday to finally lift the lid on their Android-based tablet.
Apparently the invites have been sent out and the world’s largest online retailer is finally ready to show the world what it has planned to take on Apple and its iPad dominance.
Analysts say that the offering, from the company which revolutionised electronic reading with its Kindle e-reader, could provide the first serious challenge to Apple’s iPad.
Amazon has decline to comment on the imminent unveiling, but analyst were confident that Amazon are finally ready to show their hand.
“Wednesday is tablet day,” BGC partners analyst Colin Gillis told Reuters.
Some details on the tablet are now beginning to surface; the tablet is expected to be a 7-inch touch screen and will run their own version of Android.
“The real issue here is that, you know, it is likely going to be good for consumers; is this going to be good for shareholders?,” Gillis said.
Amazon is expected to sell the tablet close to a lost, in a similar way to its kindle, and then make the money up with online services and apps.
Earlier this week Amazon finally made its own Android market place available internationally, and is being seen as the final piece in the jigsaw before the tablet announcement.
Amazon is expected to run its own “app store” separately of the one run by Google, and to maintain its own content purchasing system.
