Apple has finally put its brand new re-designed Mac Pro on sale worldwide, which means users can now get their hands on the futuristic-looking cylinder Mac computer, all for a £2,499 price tag.
Apple announced on Tuesday that it would start selling the new Mac Pro as of the December 18th – just in time for Christmas – starting from a whopping £2,499.
Apple revealed the completely re-designed Mac Pro at its annual WWDC event in San Francisco back in June, where the company revealed the long-rumoured new model. The most notable change to the new Mac was the completely different shape – going from the common box tower shape to a much smaller, cylindrical glossy black capsule.
However, inside the new Mac Pro is Apple’s expected technical punch as the Pro sports a 12-core, 256-bit Intel Xeon processor with 1,866MHz DDR3 RAM, which when paired makes the tower unit 2.5 times more powerful than it predecessor. The entry level Mac Pro also comes with 12GB of system memory, dual AMD FirePro graphics processors and 256GB of flash storage all inside the 9.9-inch tall unit.
A six-core configuration with 16GB of memory is also available but this will set you back a further £800, selling for £3,299. Both versions also come with new 20 Gbps Thunderbolt 2 connectivity for memory expansion and display output to Apple’s equally pricey Thunderbolt displays. The diminutive capsule als0 provides a new gigabit ethernet, USB 3.0 and HDMI Out sockets.
We wrote a full breakdown of what’s inside and outside of the new Mac Pro back in June when the device was launched, and we think the actual unit is a perfect example of how Apple is continuing to innovate and expand on its product range.
The new Mac Pro is aimed towards high-end users such as designers, developers, engineers and the television and film industries so whilst the pricing may shock some, it’s a very capable device which isn’t meant for everyday users. However, we can expect this sort of this radical new styling and design to be filtered down to other Mac models as time goes on, in true Apple trend – this will be the start of a new wave of products.
Both models are in the UK and US from the Apple Store from today and will be available for January delivery – unfortunately not quite in time for Christmas.
