Asus could be working on its own Intel-powered Nexus 7 rival

After helping Google to build the flagship Nexus 7 tablet, Asus could be looking to launch a powerful 7-inch Android tablet of its own. Rumour has it that the tech giant is looking to partner with chip maker Intel to launch a new Android slate.

The tablet, which apparently goes by the model number of ‘ME371MG’, will be an affordable budget tablet according to tablet.bg, which broke the news earlier this week. The site claims to have exclusive information on the upcoming tablet, although it doesn’t state where its information has come from.

Asus has a history of using Nvidia Tegra processors for its tablet devices, occasionally looking to Qualcomm as well. However, this new tablet is said to feature an Intel Atom Z2420 processor, paired with 1GB of RAM for speed.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean will be the operating system of choice, which makes this the first major Intel-powered Android tablet that we’re aware of. Intel has been putting its chips into Android smartphones for a little while now, with the most recent being Motorola’s RAZR i.

The rest of the spec sheet makes up our mind that the ME371MG will be a decidedly cheap affair, with a 3-megapixel camera on the back, 8/16/32GB of internal memory plus a micro SD card slot, and a 7-inch IPS display sporting a 1280 x 800 resolution.

It’s thought that the tablet will launch between March and May of this year, which points towards an official unveiling at this month’s MWC in Barcelona.
